Kalam Connect began where most good clinical tools begin — at the bedside, with a problem nobody had solved well enough.

A senior stroke consultant doctor and an IT consultant came together with a single idea: to help stroke patients in their daily life. Seeing numerous cases — and seeing again and again how patients were unable to communicate with their family and with the doctors and nurses caring for them — a clear need arose.

What followed was not a rushed app. It was a detailed study of how communication actually breaks down after a stroke, and a requirements process aligned with the needs of speech and language therapists: the vocabulary they teach, the goals they set, the way progress is measured, and the realities of a busy ward. From that work, a new app was developed.

Kalam Connect is the result — clinically grounded, engineered to public-sector standards, and designed so that a patient, a nurse or a grandchild can pick it up and be understood within minutes.

The founders

Dr. Abdul Salam

Senior Stroke Consultant · Clinical Lead

Dr. Abdul Salam is a Senior Stroke Consultant working at a University Hospital in Dudley, where he leads the care of patients through the acute stroke pathway and into rehabilitation. Over many years on the ward he has not only treated patients but has also been an active part of international doctorate and research forums, contributing to the wider conversation on stroke care, recovery and quality of life after stroke.

It is that daily clinical experience — watching families struggle to understand a loved one who knows exactly what they want to say — that shaped every vocabulary set, every screen and every therapy feature in Kalam Connect.

Nasir Khan

Senior IT Consultant · Technology Lead

Nasir Khan is a Senior IT Consultant with over 22 years of industry experience. He has worked with a number of central government agencies on large-scale digital transformation programmes, delivering services that must be secure, accessible and dependable for the people who rely on them most.

He is also the founder of Nash Technologies and Consulting, London.

He brings that same discipline to Kalam Connect: accessible-by-default interfaces, careful handling of personal data, and an architecture that works reliably on a hospital tablet and on a family's phone at home.
